Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island is the world's longest barrier island. It is located along the Texas southern coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It is also considered the second largest island within the United States. Activities that can be enjoyed on the island are biking, boating, fishing, surfing, camping, paddling, and swimming. To arrive at the island, drive east through Corpus Christi on Highway 358. Then cross the JFK Causway onto Padre Island. Highway 358 will change to Park Road 22. The park entrance will be 10 miles down Park Road 22.


  • The Malaquite campground is located just over 3 miles from the park entrance down Park Road 22. The campground is about 0.5 miles from the Malaquite Visitor Center.

  • The Bird Island Basin campground is situated along Laguna Madre. From the park entrance travel south on Park Road 22 for just under a mile. Turn right on Bird Island Basin Road, and travel 1.4 miles to the campground.
